comment What is a good way to comment if-else-clauses?
I go one step further and use: is_potential_elvis_impersonator. (Is/Has/etc. prefix for boolean variable..)

they can write code, it's just hard-to-read.

comment An XML file or Database?
why don't you try creating a mock-up of what the database would be? it seems like you've already talked yourself into using a db, so it may be worth it. :)

@ratchetfreak the problem is when bad programmers write hard-to-read code AND also don't comment.

comment How can I demonstrate my productivity to management?
@mark trapp: This question seems like it is part of the software development process. When I interned at a company, I was in this same situation. My huge project was to create software which would automatically connect to hardware and read/write data to it. At the end of the internship, all interns had to show what they accomplished. I felt quite embarrassed that I couldn't demo my project (it requires a complex setup) while all the other interns had many pictures (because they worked on machinery). Software, because of it's lack of tangibility, can be hard to show: "Here's what I did."

in addition to the great responses below, you should ask the opposers to provide you with an example of data that they think isn't supported. Then convert the data to show them (and the decision-makers) that they're wrong.
