@StevenJeuris: Regarding the tags: Although the question itself is language-agnostic, (a) I had the feeling that the problem is more relevant to Java/.NET developers than, for example, Perl or PHP users, (b) the examples are written in pseudo-Java/C# and (c) I was particularly interested in the opinion of Java/.NET developers (since that's what I'm using), so I wanted to attract that crowd.

@StevenJeuris: I've stumbled upon this issue in various situations, but in the current case it's a method that imports data into the local database (loads it from a web server, does some manipulations and stores it in the database).
