I am an experienced software architect/developer living in Melbourne, Australia.I am passionate about pragmatic architecture and solution design, solid development practices and code quality in enterprise development teams.

I am working on distributed systems and SOA (using WCF), legacy integration and modernisation, defining a .Net technology roadmap, application lifecycle management using TFS in my day job.

I started programming in C++ before moving on to C# about 6 years back and loving the language and .Net framework since then.

I am interested to learn from others and trying to share with the community interesting knowledge and information that I come across.

Yes shelves are accessible to other developers. One issue is that if you shelve code from a branch you or another developer cannot unshelve to a different branch. But this is possible if you install the TFS power tools msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/bb980963

comment Can non-technical staff gather requirements on behalf of the development team?
I agree with you but why can't there be a proxy between the developer and business. I my experience in large companies projects touches multiple systems (with possibly different development teams in different locations), data warehousing and reporting, infrastructure and even changes to business process itself. You need someone to take care of all this.

SCM actually means Software Configuration Management. If you have SVN that means you have version control, whether you have SCM or not is another question.

comment Architecture suggestions
It seems you are over-enginnering. What you said (stopping processes and services, deleting logfiles) are more appropriately done through scripting, my suggestion is to use powershell. You can learn it easily enough.

comment Is COBOL still worth learning?
I am from Australia as well and we just hired COBOL developers last year but for senior or lead positions, not entry level. But a lot of COBOL development is actually done through outsourcing in India.

comment So they're trying to pull me into management
I have seen people become their manager's manager because of their great management skills noticed among very senior management. The ex-manager then sits under ex-employee in hierarchy. Nothing wrong in that.

comment Is it recommendable to program .net apps with C++
@DPD - I don't see a C++/CLI project type for ASP.NET (MVC),LINQ, EF, ODATA etc. in Visual Studio 2010. So even if it possible to do the above it would be difficult with no tooling support, lack of documentation etc. So I stick to my opinion that C++/CLI is not a first class citizen in .Net world.
