comment Should a Parent with Children have a DefaultChild, or should a Child have a Default property?
Ah, interesting way to look at it. I (currently) don't expect to have an iNode in a context without its iParent, so the second approach fits the current situation.

@Brian I'm not sure what you're getting at. All this data is stored in a database, and I also need to build a model for the front-end (using MVC). I'm not asking how to do my UI, I'm asking how to store the data needed for UI logic. Perhaps I've misunderstood the scope of Programmers.SE, I'm not a frequent visitor here.

@Brian not exactly, a parent/user can choose to set a default child/customer or they can choose to not set one.

comment Are there any valid use-cases for eager boolean evaluation?
I knew about their use as bitwise operators, just today I saw them in an if for the first time. Not sure if eager boolean evaluation is the correct name for this.

I had to look up both thwarting and cryptographic timing attack, other than that it's a good answer. More information available on Security SE.

comment Can we replace XML with JSON entirely?
@MattR { "person": { "vehicles": [ { "type": "car", "colour": "red" }, { "type": "car", "wheels": 3 }, { "type": "bicycle", "wheels": 2 } ] } } you can copy-paste it to jsonlint.com for easier reading.

comment Should validation rules be tested?
See my comments to @MainMa's answer. Your answer itself is still useful in case one can't trust his/her libraries, so +1.

So it comes down to how much I trust my libraries then. In this case I trust them, they're open source and unit tested themselves. The link is interesting too.
