comment What can go wrong with composing a method name out of a string?
Assuming they did myObject.containsKey(filterMethod), or something similar, though, what would be the drawbacks?

comment Should we design programs to randomly kill themselves?
I don't think the OP is asking about killing the program in order to restore it to a properly functioning state, but to kill a program to test the system's ability to cope with its death and for any subsequent executions of the program to handle the remains.

comment Simple explanation of Continuous Integration
Is this dependent on test-driven development? Code that compiles isn't always code that works right? Without tests to fail when the code isn't ready, how would the CI system know if the code really was successfully integrated?

comment Coding style (do more, then simplify)
I suggest you read Code Complete 2 (or at least the relevant parts), which talks a lot about the non-programming aspects of programming. You may try to plan more before you start coding so you have an idea of what your goals are, what the restrictions on the inputs are, etc. One strategy mentioned is to write pseudo-code before writing the actual code. You'll be able to see the same problems you see with real code, but will be able to get to that point much quicker.

comment Keep a programming language backwards compatible vs. fixing its flaws
One of the biggest benefits to using PHP over other languages is that, since so many people have been using it for so many years, there are a plethora of content management systems, plugins, scripts, tutorials, forums, and other software written in it. If you released a new version of PHP that this code wouldn't run on, you'd take away its primary advantage over other languages.

comment Is there a point to writing in C or C++ instead of C# without knowing specifically what would make a program faster?
Hadn't thought of that, but it sounds like a good idea. I'll get everything working in C# and if I have any performance issues I'll see if I'm able to write it better in c++ or c. Thank you!

Thanks! Also, what about the sql database? Can I backup that up automatically somehow? And what about the password?

comment Managing a website with version control?
DO you mean that you used relative paths like ../images/image.png? My problem with that is that some of the scripts and css are included via PHP, where the path needs to be absolute.

If all my links are to "/images/image.png", how do I make them go to "/dev/images/image.png"? Is there something I can put in the .htaccess file to do this?

This sounds like a good idea, and I think this is what I will do. Though, the server also has WSGI/passenger-WSGI for Python. Do you know anything about installing those and getting them to work?

@FrustratedWithFormsDesigner, How are things normally done? With a second server like Oded mentioned?

What I was saying was that I could make my local machine my test environment if I installed the necessary tools, but I wouldn't know if things that worked locally would work live.

comment Programming Challenges for a beginner
I'm just a beginner myself, but I would say, hands down, that Javascript was immensely helpful in breaking me into programming. Nothing needed to be compiled, you just type it into Chrome's console and it runs. You can instantly see the results, and you feel closer to the code you're writing.

No, I don't mean broken code, I mean while you're typing you realize you needed a parenthesis earlier in the statement.
