I wouldn't say it was a problem, exactly. I just think they worked on the product because they were reticent to pick something off-limits. This was partly because I didn't adequately explain that the eligible problem domain was everything.

C++ programmers trying to hack their way through C write bad code for the same reasons why C programmers trying to hack their way through C++ write bad code. The C guys use C++ as "C with classes" while the C++ guys use C as "C++ without classes."
