A generalist developer (and geek) by heart and your down-to-earth type person by nature. I always try to find time to do what I love by keeping my geek cred up and getting into all types of technology. I code primarily in Java, but have dove into other languages to expand my knowledge.

When I'm not being distracted by the latest technologies or gadgets, I try to find time to dabble in small projects with Android or learning more of Linux in my spare time.

comment Getting graduates up to speed?
But most colleges enforce the idea of getting the assignment done. Sure, basic clean code is taught in the textbooks in college but the major point was to get your code to accomplish a task and get the end result for an assignment whether you did it in 50 lines of code or 500. Clean code almost seems to have to be self-taught as you progress in college and after. IMO colleges should introduce a course or two focusing on writing clean code and grade it somewhat like English papers, where your graded on content, structure, and readability, not just the conclusion.

comment Why do programming books have such wacky cover art?
It was that strung out college partying bug on Deitel's "Java: How to Program" cover that got me into programming, now I'm strung out corporate worker....

comment Do you keep your ideas secret? and why?
I recently found this website which could be helpful if trying to find a way to implement your idea: kickstarter.com. Like Tim mentioned below, I rather take a chance of getting ripped off by trying, than let the idea fad to memory by not trying

I think I will just hook up the laptop to my HDTV and have the sports game on in the corner while I code ;]

@TMN: You too raise a good point! My fiancée has a six-year old daughter and flu season is around the corner. Since my fiancée teaches, I think that would be a huge load off her back and mine, knowing I can stay home and watch her while I work
