comment What are the advantages of using a template language?
i think he meant "additional overhead" as far as maintenance is concerned. If you have to train new employees to use the template even tho they already know PHP, that's overhead. But I still don't necessarily agree with this answer as it currently stands.

comment Emacs/Vim/Vi - do they have a place in modern software development ecosystem?
Although I really like the question (and even +1'd it), it seems like the asker is skewing the question more towards a flame rather than a legit question. Plus, work on that acceptance rate.

comment What's the cheapest way to host hobby projects?
I got my internet blocked for a day doing this. So the OP needs to be aware of the repercussions of running a home server that is publicly accessible.

Kinda. Like if relying on PHP sanitizing functions is a pitfall, what other common actions should I do myself to ensure they're done correctly or more appropriately for my situation.

I guess I meant functions that come with the core library, not the "language" itself. Would it make more sense if I edited my question to say core libraries rather than language?

I think you may be right with the extensions comment. It looks like php has a cryptography extension. I'm assuming that's what he was talking about.

Try Project Euler. Do them in Javascript to practice coding small tests. Also, it sounds like a lot of your focus is about Ajax. I doubt they would ask you to code anything like that (although I could be wrong, so it doesn't hurt to study it). I would think they would just ask you tests dealing with coding in Javascript.

@KPO The tests will most likely be in the form of small "write a function that does this" sort of thing. But, again, I have had lengthy tests done at the interview and also tests that I was given a period of time to do from home and to return to them at a later time.

@Oded You're absolutely correct. By not asking you to code, that shows that they do not value talent.

@KPO Now that part will depend. I had one where I was allowed to use php.net for looking up function definitions. But that was the large test I mentioned in my answer. For short tests, I would expect that they wouldn't give you resources. I wasn't given any for the fizzbuzz.
