comment Could Ruby on Rails have been created in another language?
There is a "clone" of it for PHP, it's called CakePHP

comment I failed FizzBuzz, would you hire me?
@mattnz No, but I do expect someone claiming 3 years experience to be able to write a functioning if statement, and even if they get it wrong, be able to tell me, accurately, where they went wrong. (no offense to the OP, just trying to be as honest as possible)

@Lee sorry, you're right, I meant it wouldn't ever print when he wanted it to.

comment Earning extra cash as a programmer
This answer seems to make a lot of assumptions. I work a full-time job and also do contracting work for a friend without any problems. You just have to make it understood that your day job comes first. If you have time for hobby projects, you have time to work for $$.

@YannisRizos Thanks, now I see the reason :)

comment Does what I'm doing make me a software engineer?
I also dont agree that this is a duplicate. I think the OP is asking if he can claim the title of Software Engineer on a resume even tho his company never actually gave him that title. This is an issue because if the company he's interviewing with does a follow up with his old employer, there may be a discrepancy as to what his/her title was.

comment Client-Side V.S. Server-Side Searching?
Unless you're searching content already on the page, won't you need some sort of back-end to populate the data even if you perform the search in JS?

comment What's so difficult about SVN merges?
Based solely on the question and a few comments, there's nothing difficult about merging with SVN... if you never merge.

comment What's so difficult about SVN merges?
@MasonWheeler at some point, 3.0, or whatever, needs to become the current development

comment What's so difficult about SVN merges?
so trunk is just a "starting point"? i'm all for thinking about things from a different perspective, but never merging back into the heart of your development seems inherently wrong to me

comment What's so difficult about SVN merges?
What do you mean by "if you know what you're doing, you shouldn't (and shouldn't ever have to) re-merge a branch in the first place"? Why would you not remerge a branch back into trunk?

+1 for answering the actual question then providing the correct course of action

+1 for "the server should never ever trust data that is sent to it"

comment Creating a layer of abstraction over the ORM layer
You'll probably need a second layer of abstraction for the first layer of abstraction above the ORM just in case you want to change the first layer too.

comment Is it correct that Java Applets can do hardware acceleration while Flash can't?
If you're thinking of flash pre v11, you are correct. With FP11 you can now have real hardware accelerated 3d. There are 3 major players in the API realm for this, Alternativa (alternativaplatform.com/en/technologies/alternativa3d), Away3d, and Flare3d

comment What's the opposite of cohesive?
+1 I've never heard another word used besides cohesion. Using a word that isn't widely understood to be the opposite of cohesion (in software development terms) may only cause confusion.

comment Is the creator of a piece of software bound by the license he gives it?
@MartinBeckett So you are saying that if I release my content under a certain license, if PersonB adds new content, the new content is bound by that license and not my property, correct? Is PersonB assigning rights, as Mark says in his answer, or is their addition bound to the license that I put on the overall code?
