@StasM: how about weak references? That is a feature supported by a lot of languages, seems easy to implement, and makes it trivial to create an object store whose contents can be garbage collected.

So what would is_object($string) return? This would either break backwards compatibility big time, or result in the introduction of really unintuitive almost-but-not-quite-objects.
