The scientists tell me I'm a software engineer, and the engineers tell me I'm a computer scientist.

comment Should I expect my team to have more than a basic proficiency with our source control system?
If your teammates can't figure out Git you've got bigger problems than source control.

comment Is code commonly generated from UML?
We use Rational Software Architect do do our UML, and we're also required to put in class/method documentation. The only real value I found in generating Java code from the UML was to get stubs with documentation already in place.

comment How to encourage creative user interface design?
Remember that a creative/original UI design is not necessarily better. Innovation is important, it's how we move forward, but it's expensive and not everything needs to be innovative and new. It really depends on what your project and your team is like, just make sure you're spending your budget wisely.

comment How to interview a natural scientist for a dev position?
I've worked with a few scientists-turned-developers in my current position. IMHO they tend to be very good at the problem solving aspect of development and not so great at writing maintainable code with good OO principles. If you want him to do more than write 'quick and dirty' tools you may need to have a traditional developer working with him.

comment How do you address the gap on your resume after a self-funded sabbatical?
Honestly if the rest of your resume is good enough to get the interview, I wouldn't worry much about it. Most hiring managers are only looking for the good stuff on the resumes and will give you the benefit of doubt, it's the interview where they are looking for the red flags.

@Dylon Edwards Could you share what ended up happening? Were you able to re-negotiate the terms?
