Limit number of users in a web app?
Of course you can do this in PHP (you can do it in any language). The process lifecycle is irrelevant. This can be done simply by updating the database login record with the last session activity timestamp whenever an HTTP request comes in. Your "active sessions" are those records in the table with a last activity timestamp less than whatever your idle timeout is. You can have a cron run something periodically to clear these timed out sessions.
