comment Can objects constructed from the same class have unique method definitions?
Do you want to extend your answer with modules and extend-method? (Just to show some other ways to extend objects with new methods)?

A lot of legacy code in the application and no time for redesign.

comment Organizing a git repository with several projects sharing code
Did you take a look to [gits submodules}(git-scm.com/book/en/Git-Tools-Submodules)? You could create a big project, the shared code and all projects buils there own submodules. (I'm not familiar with submodules, so I can't give you a real answer).

comment git: having separate folder for development, why?
Your project folder is a separate area, not where you're serving your files from (that's github).

comment What can procs and lambdas do that functions can't in ruby
@KChaloux It's an own Method-object. The Method-class is inheriting from Proc. But I'm no expert for this, that's why I am curious on other answers for this question ;)

@JimmyHoffa In ruby you can get a Method-object with Object#method. The Method object acts as a closure in obj’s object instance, so instance variables and the value of self remain available.

comment What are the relative advantages of dictionaries versus databases?
know sqlite. But if I want to modify data (e.g. a quick change to test something), I need a short script/command or an administration tool. With json (I use yaml) I can use the editor and change the textfile.

comment Is it common to have downtime at a programming job?
In my company it's the opposite. The company 'close', so we schedule our 'big' upgrades in this times, the downtime of the servers have not the big effects.
