comment Asking potential developers to draw UML diagrams during the interview
I really think this sort of question also lends itself to finding out if they can communicate effectively or not. Forcing them to use a diagram helps you figure out their communication style as well.

comment Is there ever a reasonable time to have test fixtures test MVC3 controller construction?
To be more precise, you are responsible for any SOUP regardless of what standard you follow, as an FDA or third party auditor will definitely consider on the hook for it. You don't need to be following IEC 62304 to be responsible for SOUP, its just a lot clearer about validation in the standard when you do.

comment How deep should we dive into testing different layers
How orthogonal do you want Glue to be to the other layers? Do you intend to use Glue in other software systems as is, or is the coupling with the Drupal API important?

comment How deep should we dive into testing different layers
Do your Business layer unit tests involve using objects within the Glue layer, or are your tests for the Business layer completely separate?

comment Is adhering to one assert per test foolish consistency in this case?
I've done this before. Not a bad way to go. It's easy to read, and you can understand the nature of what its doing.

Are you avoiding any persistent data storage for your implementation, or is anything up for grabs at this point?

comment Question regarding code readability
if you used hasErrors() incorrectly throughout your code, you could be surprised by the results - the function doesn't really tell me what it's checking for errors. Also, if you intend to use the new function only once, why create a function call at all?

comment Should I use JSON just to use JSON
You don't need to learn JavaScript to use/abuse JSON. It's language-independent.

comment Should I accept a job if pair programming is required?
With pair programming, you definitely have to keep an open mind. We do it in our office a bit (not officially), and it seems to help in some cases. I tend to agree with this wiki article on the benefits of pair programming, but YMMV: c2.com/cgi/wiki?PairProgrammingBenefits

comment Any advice from self-taught programmers on competing with more conventional types?
That doesn't mean my advice is rubbish. It's only a part of the answer. Likely the poster already does algorithm analysis... maybe not in the CS theoretical sense, but anyone who reads and writes code has at least some level of understanding on how to analyze an algorithm.
