comment How to refactor an OO program into a functional one?
For some deep background you might look at Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs By Harold Abelson and Gerald Jay Sussman. http://mitpress.mit.edu/books/structure-and-interpretation-computer-programs This has a section on how to build OO programs using a functional language Scheme (LISP). Javascript The Good Parts by Douglas Crockford also shows how functional transitions into OO. I know this is the wrong way round for your purposes but it may give you some insights.
