Thanks for the response Pinetree. What about the module controllers though. If I need a module controller to create another controller or any other object, I would have to either: a) pass the DI Container to the controller or b) pass the Front Controller to the Controller. But this does not seem desirable, it's just an indirect dependency on the DI controller.

Sorry for the confusion JohnFx. You do bring up an pertinent point - I failed to account for the users in my question. How would you modify it to record which user set the tags? A single field in the ItemTags table with a list of all users who chose that tag perhaps? or a record in the table for each user? or another table, UserItemTags, linking each user to an item and the tag they chose? Thanks again

Yes each tag will be applied to an item once, the first time it is set by the user. If the tag is set by another user, it will update the tag_hits for the same tag, as indicated in my question. Thanks
