Is it just me, or are none of these answers very satisfying?

@ThomasOwens I don't think asking about the cons of something is any more debatable or prone to discussion than other questions on Programming SE. Could you comment? Thanks.

comment What are the cons of using XML for GUI development?
@Ramhound I didn't say they didn't exist, I said I haven't seen them. Since I clearly can't know every technology ever made, that means I'm implying it's not widespread enough. Even after reading these comments I still feel it's not widespread enough.

@suslik It's not really different, it's just that anyone can do what they want with XML, including making an XML schema that has lots of options for styling, and a parser that has cool features like overriding styles. You can't do that with HTML, since it has a set schema.

@Carson63000 Are WPF and Silverlight desktop technologies? It's interesting that Windows 8 is using it since it seems to be a table/desktop blend.

comment Best approach for a database of long strings
@JamesAnderson They'll be a couple of paragraphs long on average. But there's going to be thousands of them in the near future, and I just don't think SQL in the way I've been using it (emails and names, i.e. small strings) is the best way to go. I might be wrong, I don't know.

comment Best approach for a database of long strings
I was referring to some clever way of storing them, maybe through some type of compression, not plaintext strings. I'm worried about essentially the size of the database here.

comment Database of words and related words for search engine
From what I see on their website (code.google.com/apis/customsearch/docs/basics.html), it's targeted towards webpage searches. Am I mistaken on this? From their site: "Google Custom Search enables you to create a search engine for your website, your blog, or a collection of websites."

comment What's the difference between syntax and semantics?
I understand that I didn't mention any research effort, but when I was told that those two terms were different, I was given the dictionary definitions. That didn't help me understand anything.
