comment Why are errors named as “Exception” but not as “Error” in programming languages?
Don't forget VB (classic, not. Net). On Error Goto was used. And the most amazing invention of all time "On Error Resume Next"

comment Does directly accessing an applications database break the license agreement?
Writing to the database can be a tricky thing. Especially if you have a support contract with them. If you start changing data yourself, you may mess up something that their application depends on. Writing to the database is more of a "reverse engineering" then just reading it. To put it more plainly, You can go ahead start modifying all the values your want in about:config, but don't expect Mozilla to help you out when something goes terribly wrong.

comment How can I automate production deployments without experiencing extreme anxiety?
I agree with this. Something as simple as a batch file (or series of them) to do your deployment for you can ease the tension a lot. Use batch files to ensure that you don't make any mistakes, and run the manually to ensure that there aren't any catastrophic errors while running the batch files.

comment How do I convince my employer to hire an additional developer without selling myself short?
I would rather the Lottery factor. It doesn't even have to be 300 million. What if you only win $50K? If you're in a really bad job, you may use the money to finance yourself over the next few months for finding a new job. Lottery can be any situation that causes someone to leave the company unexpectedly, be it the actual lottery, inheritance, a new job opportunity, or some other kind of "Lottery" classicshorts.com/stories/lotry.html. Lottery just kind of has more positive connotations associated with it than getting hit by a bus.

comment How do you learn Regular Expressions?
Loved this book. Key point being that it helped me understand all the different functionalities available in Regex. You won't be able to memorize all the syntax from reading a book, but the book will show you all the things that exist so you know what tools you have to solve a problem when it comes along.

comment Are developers more productive at night?
Less distraction is the key. I usually come into the office about an hour earlier than my colleagues. In that single hour, I get about 3 times the amount of work I would get done than in the hour when the regular distractions are going on.

Actually a very sane way to follow up. Make him see the ignorance of his ways.

@muntoo, you need to inline all those functions so you don't have to jump back and forth between pages. Otherwise one might have a lot of trouble getting back up the stack.

comment Why isn't Java used for modern web application development?
@jetti, Thats pretty good pricing. All the recommended one's I've seen cost a lot more. I haven't hear of these guys. What's their reliability like?

I know a lot of people that can't even distinguish between Java and Javascript. Even though they are completely unrelated. This is another thing that gives Java a bad name.

@Jetti, show me a windows host with the same features and limitations as your average LAMP host for anywhere near $10. Usually there are severe limits on the database usage size such as small storage limits or no database at all without extra money.

Facebook also does something similar. Their code base is in PHP, but because of speed and scalability problems, they had to write a compiler (HipHop) that compiled the PHP to C++, which is then compiled using g++. It's funny how everybody talks about how great ruby and PHP are and that all the sites are built around them, but then when you look at how inefficient they are, most large organizations have to switch to something else. If I recall correctly, Craigs List hasa lot of backend code written in C/C++ for this very reason.
