comment What's the difference between the terms “protocol” and “standard”?
A defacto standard can indeed be proprietary, and is often the start of a more open standard or standardization (by a standards body).

comment Starting a Windows task from Linux, what are my options?
My main change to your answer would be to use Python on windows instead of Node, only because the rest of their software is written in it. It depends on how much they need to interact with the Windows based software. There's also Edge.js for node, if it's easier to interact via .Net with the app. I'd also mention that a Message Queue could be used for the abstraction as well, which may be cleaner depending on their needs, and if multiple systems will be calling, and there are needs for one request to finish before another starts.

comment How can I decouple query and context in a “query object” scenario?
I'm pretty much with the second half of @Jules answer on this one... In my own experience trying to create layers of abstraction and indirection for a potential scenario of changing backing data stores will create more chance of error than keeping it far simpler and doing a proper migration if/when the need happens. In C# it's far easier to rip out the old, add in the new, and fix all the wholes than maintain more layers of IFoo.

comment Web developer sending port in web service from server to client
Your best bet is to bind to a known port... you should be able to do this in your project configuration file... Right click the project and go to web settings. Set the port to a fixed number and save all. You can then pass this to the client. At in your main master page/layout template, add a script field before your client script blocks that injects this as a value from your web config. Use a config transform for your production settings.

comment Which hashing algorithm is best for uniqueness and speed?
I am curious as to the intent of said hash. Depending on your needs, security is the opposite of speed. Fast means easier to brute force, while hashes such as scrypt work to the opposite. I've found that SHA512 is generally good enough, and depending on the settings scrypt can be overkill. Also, as always, one should salt one's hashes, and add random seed bytes into encrypted streams to ensure greater uniqueness.

It seems to me, what you probably want is a queue/stream from the server...

comment flow control solutions in Node.js - use async.waterfall?
I still like to have separate functions below the logic (hoisting makes this possible).
