Software engineer for the New York Times.

I am a web developer working primarily with Python web services. Most of the projects I have worked on have been web applications in variants of the Front Controller MVC pattern. I've also worked extensively utilizing Jquery for front-end client side architecture, integrating dynamic server responses with AJAX to create rich web experiences. My foray into web development began with PHP applications, and my framework of choice in that context is Kohana 3.1.

My main focus in development is innovation. I believe in working hard at understanding core concepts under the hood, even if that occasionally means 'wasting time' (your mileage may vary) on reinventing the wheel. More than anything else I appreciate the sense of community that pervades this profession.

comment Does anyone work 10 hours shifts as a developer?
Great references. There is definitely a point of diminishing returns, especially in programming.

comment Conventions for search result scoring
@pdr The unfortunate truth is that we are a small startup, and as the lead server-side dev I am co-opted into making these decisions despite the fact that under ideal circumstances they would be better left to a data scientist of some sort. They give me the rough "abstract" (using the term kindly) of what type of data should be extracted via query and I chart the best possible course I can think of with the tools available (hence the emphasis we have on nltk, given the descriptive pairs goal.) Perhaps you've had similar situations and can sympathize? :)
