comment Why do some languages recommend using spaces rather than tabs?
Yeah, but Python is weird that way. I've never come across anything else that cares about spaces.

re: "whether I'm viewing it in an IDE, or less, or Notepad; i.e. spaces are more portable" - this is the best argument for spaces I've ever heard. I'm a "tabs" guy myself, but have occasionally disliked seeing tab-spaced code rendered in unexpected ways.

comment How can I convince my managers to enforce documentation standards?
Ater spending entirely too long digging, here are some of my own findings: usna.edu/EE/ec361/Lab/documentationstandards.htm , gnu.org/prep/standards/standards.html#Comments , and less authoritative, but very informative: codinghorror.com/blog/2008/07/coding-without-comments.html and kuro5hin.org/story/2004/2/15/71552/7795

@clamontagne - your link to Google is actually really pretty good... if I can get more stuff like that, it would help.

comment How can I convince my managers to enforce documentation standards?
No, I'm not looking for standards, I'm really looking for authoritative citations and references supporting the use of thorough documentation / commenting. It's the citations and references I'm looking for, not the standards.

@YannisRizos - Thank you, yes, that's exactly right... on further reflection, I think maybe clamontagne is highlighting that this my problem (not the question I asked) is difficult because I'm dealing with opinions here at work. But yes, I tried to phrase my question so that it is not subjective - it is exactly as you have summarized.

@ThomasOwens - Yes, you understand my problem exactly, I DO need to sell it to management to get the developers to listen.

@Chad - I did, I said we use C# with a little Matlab...

comment How can I convince my managers to enforce documentation standards?
@ThomasOwens, Unfortunately, we have probably thousands of lines of code owned by a non-software group, much of if written by people who are specialists in some other discipline, and picked up programming just to create tools (that grew, and grew...) for themselves. So the group has smart guys who haven't necessarily learned about writing clean, modular, easy to read, well documented code...
