Just a kid going through college in hopes to change the world, or at the very least get a decent career in software development.

While I'm going through school I've been working on some projects to further my learning outside of school. Right now I'm focused on a Ruby on Rails project "qRPSd // Rails" - It's an effort to provide the tools needed to play a classic tabletop RPG over the internet! (Which is pretty neat, to me, because it'll let me play some old favorites with friends that are pretty far away.)

This site has provided me with awesome help in the past; so I hope to become an active member of StackOverflow, both as a learner and maybe a teacher :)!

comment How can I deal with the cargo-cult programming attitude?
Isn't SICP kind of famous for saying that programming is analogous to spell casting? I mean, I doubt your students are quoting SICP or even making a comparison akin to what Abelson and Sussman were trying to portray, but I don't see how it's inherently wrong that someone compare program writing to spellcasting, when one of the most famous computer programming books out there does the exact same thing in the first couple pages.

@littleadv I know DreamSpark has the server operating systems available for free. IIRC it simply requires a *.edu email address (in other words: I don't think the school has to explicitly participate in the DreamSpark program.) Also your school may participate in MSDN-AA, which offers Windows (professional editions), free of charge, to the students/faculty, licensed per semester.

comment Should a competent programmer be able to come up with his own shortest path algorithm?
Don't worry, if brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough of it.

comment Should programmers stay at the internship they had before they graduated?
@Simon: Wasn't necessarily trying to show sympathy. Just saying that I'm in a similar situation, and letting the author know that his question (and the answers to his question) applies to others. I feel that one of the qualities of a good question is that it's answers can help as many people as possible.

comment Why are data structures so important in interviews?
Yup. My dad taught me how to take anything apart. He neglected to teach me how to put things back together, been figuring that out all my life.

Upvote because I am currently at an internship following up my 2 years at community college and will be starting at a 4-year school (for 2-years) in the fall. Our situations seem shockingly similar, and it intrigues me.

comment Wrapping my mind around prefix notation?
User RPL is by far my favorite flavor of LISP. It doesn't even have any parentheses! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPL_(programming_language) I miss using my HP 50g :-(

comment Why isn't Java used for modern web application development?
@Jetti: There's also another cost to ASP.NET though, and that is licensing of the tools. If you want a pro version of VS2010, you need to shell out some decent cash. Of course students, and anyone employed in the .NET sector likely have copies of VS2010 handed to them, and there's always the Express edition.

comment A modern review of Java
Obviously I haven't seen Minecraft's code, but I can't imagine that game is not performant because of a shortcoming in Java. Just looking at how the game saves worlds as a huge sequence of folders/files (or rather, how it used to save worlds. Haven't played in a while.) and it's no wonder that the game is slow. That's a lot of disk access, no language is going to make that faster.

So wait, are you saying that there's a correlation between my being a programmer, and my odd habit of getting to know a car intimately before I drive it?
