Perfectly good question. If you answer was no, you would not have been a good fit for the team. Hence a very good predictor o fitness for the job.

Fair enough, but notice that your question does not mention the guy's name, what he did, when he did it, etc. It just says: "Ruby is nice". Well Puppies are also Nice, but that' not an answer to this question.

@Joonas, If they do the same thing, the second one would have costed 100 times more for the same benefit and I would fire that programmer for such waste.

@Thorbjørn Any problem cal be solved on infinite time. For this particular piece of code I would argue that the more time it took, the less of a feat it id. To put it another way, If I had infinite of time I would be able to do it, and it would not be remarkable.

Hum. I think you misunderstand the question. It was not about nice systems, but rather about impressive feats done by specific people.

Still, it might make the cut if it was thought out on the spot, by some king idiot savant programmer. If it took months of hard work and reserach it certainly does not classify as a programming feat. Either way, teher's no data to support the origin story, so if it is a feat, it's at best an urban legend.

Didn't Linus work alone on Linux for like a month or so and then turned it a very sucessfull community project? Great work indeed, but I would not classify as an individual feat of programming, but rather as a very successful collaborative open source project.

How is this a feat of programming?

Hum... That might be (extremely) clever, but it's like 6 lines of code and only a tiny building block of a much larger app. I don't understand how it is extreme in any of the dimensions I listed.
