comment How to climb up the hierarchy from a programmer (codesmith) to a full-fledged Software Engineer?
I'm glad to read your answer here. You last 3 lines are what I have also observed in my part of the world as well i.e. in Pakistan. The terms Software Engineer and programmer are often used synonymously particularly when it comes to small or medium sized enterprise projects. Essentially, speaking an "engineer" is someone who seeks a logical and sustainable solution to a problem within predefined budget constraints. Correct me if I am wrong. So the bottom line here is that a Software Engineer to a Programmer is like what a Civil Engineer is to a Mason. Thank you

@Yannis Rizos Besides UML and SAD, a Software Engineer should be good in management and communication skills. He must know about proper resource allocation, costs and the consequences of developing and implementing a software solution. This is in precise what I exactly meant by a Software Engineer.

Wonder the certifications offered by SEI (Software Engineering Institute) helps as alternate to a degree when you talk about education? FYI: sei.cmu.edu/certification

@RobZ@YannisRizos Strictly speaking there is a difference between a Software Engineer and a Project Lead. An experienced programmer may be designated as a Project Lead for a certain software project while for Software Engineer, you have to have a certain set of knowledge and skills.

@Baboon And those diagrams in VS2010 can be understood by anyone irrespective that person knows UML or not? My emphasis upon learning UML for programming, not necessarily to become an expert in it. And if you talk about System Analysis & Design then UML is the best tool a software engineer can use to communicate with his team about the design requirements of a system.

@Baboon UML is the need of the hour to this date and for many years to come for huge and complex systems. There are a number of diagrams in UML that makes you understand how a complex system behaves and helps programmers write their classes in an effective manner. comment How to use a switch statement with enum efficiently?
@Tim Medora Thanks Tim. Let's say that the values would remain constant and the list will not grow.In such a scenario, I can use (London = 201, Frankfurt = 233, etc.), then how can I assign the flight no. once the user chooses the destination without using switch?

And here Destination is simply an enum i.e. enum Destination {London, Frankfurt, Berlin}...right?

comment How did you pick up the art of solving real life problems? Can you shortcut the process?
@herby But OOP is not the only paradigm in the world of programming! C++ allows multiple inheritance that languages like SmallTalk and Java does not allow. You could be right about SmallTalk when it comes to learning OOP but what Soham is after is applying programming principles to solve real world problems.

The first line of your answer sounds quite logical but don't you feel that studying so many different languages may deviate him from his pet language which is C++. Those you have mentioned are very good languages in terms of academic research but what what he is looking for is industrial grade work! SICP and MELT are great resources indeed. Thanks for sharing them.

@Yannis Rizos How about Ruby? It also allows single inheritance only but again considered a purer than Java in terms of OOP.
