Saved from the web by a job in industry. Coding GUI for computer-aided railway realignment machinery.

At last a job where I have time to do stuff properly and don't have to worry about loads of unfixed bugs coming back to haunt me.

How about just posting subtly broken code?

"Programmers are way more expensive than machines." is also something that's new, compared to 'before'.

comment Is MVVM in WPF outdated?
So it's WPF that is 'out of date'? Concerning your first sentence: is it that in real life UI and code are just too intertwined to make it a realistic proposition, or could some tweaks in WPF have made it the Holy Grail (or nearly?)

comment When does implementing MVVM not make sense
@Sean, sorry, I'm on my third day, and still struggling :( Maybe it's because I'm trying to do 'complicated' stuff like opening dialog boxes, or setting the selected item in a treeview from my model...

Here is an embarrassingly over-complicated example of using them (for the Weak Event Pattern that ta.speot.is describes below)

comment How could you reconcile declarative database development and non-trivial data 'motions'?
@DocBrown, I've 'relaxed' my theoretical 'requirements' to also accept solutions with non-declarative data migrations, but which can be elegantly combined.

Having started looking at VSDB yesterday, I find your last paragraph rather alarming. Sounds like I shouldn't bother investing much time or energy...?

@ErikReppen, it only works if you code in straight lines (no branches, no merges, and - worst of all - no comparisons)

Premature generalization is responsible for most of the gumph in our current code base.

comment What is the best way to allow a non-coding designer to design intranet web pages?
@Rich, I really think you'll be better off asking her for a photoshop, then 'hacking' the html into your .NET on your own. It's a pain, but far less pain than reinstalling your server. You need to convince you PHBs that there is not 'quick and cheap' solution to this. If he wants pretty, it's going to cost.

@Rich, if all she knows is Joomla, and you are in a .NET shop, something somewhere has gone horribly wrong...
