A factory can often also be configured after creation. The major difference, afaik, to a builder is that a builder is typically used to create a single, complex instance, while factories are used to create many similar instances.

True, but it is a property often found in dynamic languages. I mentioned the need for first-class function in the beginning of my answer.

Read past the second paragraph and you will get to the "how other languages do it" part. (PS: the other answer also doesn't show alternatives)

comment Should I refund a client or not?
Do you mean "should" in an ethical or legal sense? If it's the former, then "no"; if it's the latter, that depends so much on where you live and what exactly you have agreed on that only a lawyer could tell you.

comment Why define a Java object using interface (e.g. Map) rather than implementation (HashMap)
No, SortedMap is not an implementation, that's exactly the point. It is the interface for maps that sort by key.

When you need a map that is sorted, the parameter type should be SortedMap‌, not TreeMap.

comment How to unit test a missing case in a switch statement where all cases are true
So basically, if you add an element the analyzer will tell you to fix the Error method? What happens when the enum comes from a libary and gets a new element with the next release, but the method in question is not updated yet? I'm asking, because that is the reason why the static analyzer of Java forces you to cover the default case, even if it seems "impossible" to reach.

What happens in Erlang when you add another enum element?

Notice that there is a difference between making an algorithm more efficient and choosing a more efficient algorithm.
