I've been programming since my early teens and like so many of us, I started Basic on the usual home computers like Atari 800XL, ZX Spectrum etc. "Turned pro" about 20 years ago.

I've been mostly doing C++ during this time, writing anything from device drivers for various operating systems to trading systems for banks.

comment C++ and the use of old Visual Studio versions
I severely disagree with the statement about VS6 - the C++ compiler is both utterly horrible and not supported any longer by MS. You cannot conceivably write anything remotely resembling halfway modern C++, nor can you use some of the more advanced and useful libraries like boost. Well, you can use small parts of it...

You're in the UK, right? So who hasn't paid you - the agency or is the client supposed to be paying you directly? I've contracted in the UK for years and often the problem isn't the client but the agency. You also mention an umbrella company so you basically seem to have all the usual moving parts that seem to go wrong.

comment Do you use your personal laptop for work?
Good point about bringing work home, plus I do like a dual-screen setup too (even have one at home) and I don't think the MacBook Pros can drive two screens. They can drive one and you can use the internal one, but that's not that great. Plus, even good laptop keyboards aren't that brilliant for coding anyway.

Very good point - unfortunately there are a lot of used car salesweasel types out there in the recruitment business, so personal recommendations are usually worthwhile.

comment Can you change a license once you pick one?
That's not really a solution to the license issue (ie, the legal license under which the software is released to the general public), though.
