How do you handle database security from a desktop application? On the topic of bindings; not using ORM like NHibernate is (I think) a non issue. If you use web services as an example, you will find many ways to efficiently bind your data to XML. |

New application development - Use existing database or create a new one? Can you give some additional context on the nature of the web app? Are you taking orders? Allowing self service updates to personal details eg phone and address? |

Should we avoid object creation in Java? Objects are short-lived (less than 0.5sec in the general case). That volume of garbage still affects performance. |

How can I convince management to deal with technical debt? First line - "It has to be a very convincing argument [] that I couldn't use that money now to do something more important to me." I use the fridge example as frankly, I don't care about what goes on inside my fridge. I just want an outcome. (cold food at a reasonable price). To be blunt, I don't care if the fridge engineers think it's a better product internally. I might consult them but it's really not their decision. |

Should we avoid object creation in Java? Object creation is cheaper now than it used to be. It's not free though. Anyone who tells you that is lying. And the link about OO languages beating C is a exaggerated response to someone who is genuinely trying to learn. |

Should we avoid object creation in Java? And - most expensive operation as compared to what? Compared to calculating pi to 900 digits or compared to incrementing an int? |

How can I satisfy this project requirement? You've got 6 weeks, stop wasting time on stack exchange. Build something simple, and iterate it. If you find an issue that can only be solved by switching, then switch. Keep your dependencies isolated if practical and you shouldn't find it hard to switch. |

Multiple Joins or Simple Readable Database Calls This is more a case of know your dbms. I don't know SQL Server, but if I found that with Oracle, I would say your statistics are off and you should focus your energy there. |
