I love low level programming and optimizing things for speed and concurrency.

comment Why hasn't a faster, “better” language than C come out?
Sorry David, but the struct is a terrible hack, and nothing then a fanboy excuse. I'm sick of it. For example you can't apply them in a single expression as multiple parameter, assignment need additional code, you can't simply ignore one, you need struct definitons etc. pp. It is not the same as multiple return values. And while some compilers might be smart enough to even return the struct in multiple registers it usually does not happen.

comment Optimizing sorting large amounts of text stored in a database
Several books of 600 pages sounds like a job for grep not a database

comment Are there any algorithms for splitting or combining words into their more common form?
But it is hard to prevent google from blocking your IP for illegal webscrapping their service. They really don't like it and even a small text could result in hunderts of queries.

comment Why Garbage Collection if smart pointers are there
Boehm GC isn't that bad of an implementation. But most people use it like a brainless throw in conversative collector while it is very adaptable and if you are a language developer you really should care about a much tighter integration.

comment Learning MFC: Pre-2010 vs 2010 and beyond
Writing a large Win32 only application, been there done that, not doing it again. Unfortunately MFC is the only thing you have if you ever really intend to develop desktop apps. Killer Feature: Good COM Control support. And important 3rd Party widgets.

comment Windows GUIs: How Long Will 'Deprecated' APIs Last?
Mark Trapp, this was a very reasonable question and a discussion would makes sense and you can logical deduct the validity of business decisions (like API lifetime). Stackoverflow and partner sites are really getting a problem close/delete nazis like you. Stackexchange is about discussion.

comment PHP web application architecture/design
I wouldn't blame CodeIgniter. I prefer it over Zend every time. If it is a large application you want a small toolkit like CodeIgniter that you can completely understand and change and not a monster like Zend. You can "steal" features from Zend Framework anyway.

It is more that it was developed for 20 year old hardware limits, when systems had 8MB Memory. At this time every bit counted and a windows clock app was possible with only 24kb, while GTK requires 2MB.
