comment Passing central objects around or having global instances?
Yes, it is confusing with singleton pattern. But "never use the traditional singleton pattern approach" does not tell the whole story. That was my point. Maybe a clarification?

Where does this rule come from? In my world where I use an object oriented language, I think that there actually should be singletons. The idea with object oriented development is that you model the classes after the real world. If there is an object that is only one instance and there will only be one instance, it should actually be a singleton. Otherwise you are not using object oriented development in a right way. There are workarounds to fix the issue with "hard to test" when using the singleton pattern. However public statics for the easy of programming should be avoided.

Using the same editor to create newer versions of the same editor is possible. Just run different instances of it. However from the beginning you must use another tool.

OK, then I understand your motivation behind your question. And I think that it is relevant in this situation.

@mattnz I was asking this because I think the question could be improved. It is not self explanatory why one would need tools agnostic terminology in an environment with only one VCS. At least not to me. But maybe I am stupid ;-)

I think it could be confusing to have one set of agnostic terminology. Why do you want agnostic terminology? What are you trying to achieve?
