Not every "contract" you sign is legal and enforcable. Unless what you are doing on your own time, and using your own space and equipment, competes directly with your employer, they would have a difficult time enforcing anything as draconian as "you can't write code that's not for us". Imagine a car repair technician who was forbidden from fixing his own car?
