Young graduated developer. I've obtained my Master's Degree in sandwich courses. During my studies I was working in a company specialized in the migration and modernization of IT systems. I'm mainly interested in Java technologies. My last job was in Amsterdam, where I was an Hybris developer.

Yes, you're right, when I say "look different" I mean in the bad way. For example I made vertical panes, it work on Linux and Windows but on Mac, labels inside don't appear.

I'm reading that SWT is based on AWT heavyweight component and AWT is why Swing suffer of platform dependancy no? "James Gosling, the creator of the Java language, has argued that SWT is too simple, and that SWT is a difficult toolkit to port to new platforms for the same reason that AWT used to have porting problems" (from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Widget_Toolkit)

Thanks for the precision about Swing and GUI. Love the "write once, test everywhere" ;)

comment Why don't schools teach about bad code?
I disagree with your question because it's to specific to your school. I'm student (last year) and I really don't have this feeling. All my classes are about programming scalable and permformant application based on efficient architechtual model. The example you used refer to performance tuning, and this domain can easily be learn with alone, school is here to explain concepts not to be so much specific on every details... Btw I should mention I'm in an alternate cursus (2/3 weeks in enterprise) maybe that's why school classes consider those domain.

Ok, it's wired... Is there any reason for such low informations about those kind of frameworks?

comment Does the use of debuggers have an effect on the efficiency of programmers?
@RonWarholic In order to know number of method executions you can use profiler it's easier than use print statement or the debugger. I use Netbeans profiler, it give also the execution time per method, memory use, heap, etc...

@JoelFan No, all learn by myself. I just know some basis like the tips in Garrett Hall answer.

@Maxood I learned that black box testing focus on the application from the user view, in order to make abstraction of code. So why use a debugger to realize black box tests? (I'm a developer more than a tester sry if the question is silly...)

Ofc, in my comment I was only speaking of time measurement that you took as example. I've understand well your opinion and I agrre!

@ThorbjørnRavnAndersen In other words it's mostly an intrinsic issue.

Yeah right! That often append, by the way I prefer use Netbeans Profiler for this kind of issue. I've noticed that step over lines time is not always significant.

Thanks for the answer. I don't always write my code debugging step by step ofc, but for complex algorithm (for example I made a cobol analyser in Java) I've use this method in order to access the hundreds of arrays that contains different kind of data. And also very often to test my long patterns :)
