I work as a PHP developer at Pentalog where we develop the largest dating site in Europe.

I thrive in challenging environments and am never afraid to get my hands dirty.

My passions include computer programming, psychology and poker.

comment Does dealing with legacy code help one evolve as a programmer?
It would be great to find some code comments or project documentation in these situations. Otherwise that hack or weird way to implement a function will remain a mistery. That developer may not even be in the company anymore, so there's no way for you to ask him about it.

comment The Relative Cost Efficiency of (Acceptance) Test Driven Development
OK, this is a good idea to check out. The team which I'm part of switched to TDD a few months ago. While we did see an increase in code quality (less nr of bugs and better modularity), we also saw an increase in development time. These things are subjective, but I'm pretty sure we can generate some statistics based on the entries in our bugtracker, JIRA etc. Now I'm curious too about seeing such metrics :) .

comment Preventing password hashing algorithm from overloading CPU
Actually, the OP is talking about hashing methods that are intentionally made slow. For example, take a look at bcrypt: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bcrypt

comment Am I covered with GPL If I want to share open source code of project developed in my company?
Whatever answers you receive here, always keep in mind that trusting strangers on the Internet with legal advice can have serious consequences. The answers here are just a guideline, since the full context of your question is unknown. The best you can hope for from Programmers.SE is figuring out who to ask for help and if it's worth it. If this is something important for you, contact a lawyer and discuss it with him/her. Your company probably has some legal department that you can ask for help on this.

"My current contract says that either party may cancel the contract with 1 weeks notice for any reason". Was it hard getting them to agree to this ?

the question is not specific to C++ or Java, instead it's language agnostic

comment Can the version of Git vary between team members?
OK, I looked a bit at the changelog for a few of the versions, but the damn thing is too vast and long. However, I didn't find anything really significant, so you're probably right about the backwards-compatibility...

comment What to do when I just don't know what's wrong?
@GilbertLeBlanc 's suggestion is actually extremely valuable. During sleep, the brain works actively at solving problems you encountered during the day. It happened to me countless times: I would stare for hours at a problem or piece of code without being able to figure it out. The next morning, when I go back to it, the answer just pops up in a matter of minutes...
