If you have any questions about the moderation on Programmers, please post a question on meta or chat. Any other attempts at communication will be ignored.

I've been a developer for over 30 years in one form or another. I learnt Pascal at University and my first job was programming in Fortran 66. I've since moved to C# & .NET via Ada, C and C++.

Over the years I've worked for companies of all sizes from 3 person startups to multi-national organisations with 1000's of employees. I've also worked at all levels from junior programmer to team lead/technical architect and one stint as a manager. I've seen various development methodologies from classic waterfall to Scrum implemented and used with varying degrees of success.

comment What are the arguments against or for putting application logic in the database layer?
@Nim - unless I'm doing it wrong, it involves database projects rather than the simple "edit it and it's checked out" you get when source control is integrated into your IDE.

comment Windows Service or Windows Task Scheduler?
@bigown - what the utility does is not subjective, merely (from this post) unknown.

comment Windows Service or Windows Task Scheduler?
@Mark - depending on what the utility actually does there is a reasonably objective answer. In this case I think it's to run a scheduled task.

comment What are the disadvantages of test-first programming?
@tvanfosson - because they're trying to change two things at once - both starting testing and also TDD - which can be problematical. It also adds to time estimates - quite correctly - so managers and customers only see the up front increase, not that the overall time is actually known (for once) and may even be less. If they're doing some testing then this increase will be less.

comment What are the disadvantages of test-first programming?
@Jaco - unfortunately it seems that a lot of people are moving to TDD from little/no unit testing...

If you are doing testing now the total time spent in development shouldn't change significantly. It only looks like things are taking longer because you are exposing the time it takes to write and maintain unit tests.

comment What are off-shore resources' experiences like working for foreign companies?
@Xepoch - I wasn't suggesting that interchangeable was the opposite of irreplaceable. Everyone is replaceable, but there is always a cost - even if it's kept to a minimum. Using the word "resource" implies (to me) that someone somewhere hasn't taken that cost into account.

Calling a person a "resource", whether they're employed directly or off-shore, implies that they are interchangeable with (almost) any other person and that their skills, needs etc. aren't important. It effectively de-humanises them. It makes it easier to fire them (sorry "let them go"), and ignores their domain knowledge - which is vitally important to them being successful developers.

Well calling someone a "resource" highlights one of the major problems with out sourcing.
