If you have any questions about the moderation on Programmers, please post a question on meta or chat. Any other attempts at communication will be ignored.

I've been a developer for over 30 years in one form or another. I learnt Pascal at University and my first job was programming in Fortran 66. I've since moved to C# & .NET via Ada, C and C++.

Over the years I've worked for companies of all sizes from 3 person startups to multi-national organisations with 1000's of employees. I've also worked at all levels from junior programmer to team lead/technical architect and one stint as a manager. I've seen various development methodologies from classic waterfall to Scrum implemented and used with varying degrees of success.

comment How much effort should we spend to programming for multiple cores?
@Lorenzo - In that case you'll need to see if you can tie the thread to a single core - which is perhaps a special case - but an interesting one.

comment What are the arguments against or for putting application logic in the database layer?
@Nim - unless I'm doing it wrong, it involves database projects rather than the simple "edit it and it's checked out" you get when source control is integrated into your IDE.

comment Windows Service or Windows Task Scheduler?
@bigown - what the utility does is not subjective, merely (from this post) unknown.

comment Windows Service or Windows Task Scheduler?
@Mark - depending on what the utility actually does there is a reasonably objective answer. In this case I think it's to run a scheduled task.

comment What are the disadvantages of test-first programming?
@tvanfosson - because they're trying to change two things at once - both starting testing and also TDD - which can be problematical. It also adds to time estimates - quite correctly - so managers and customers only see the up front increase, not that the overall time is actually known (for once) and may even be less. If they're doing some testing then this increase will be less.

comment What are the disadvantages of test-first programming?
@Jaco - unfortunately it seems that a lot of people are moving to TDD from little/no unit testing...
