If you have any questions about the moderation on Programmers, please post a question on meta or chat. Any other attempts at communication will be ignored.

I've been a developer for over 30 years in one form or another. I learnt Pascal at University and my first job was programming in Fortran 66. I've since moved to C# & .NET via Ada, C and C++.

Over the years I've worked for companies of all sizes from 3 person startups to multi-national organisations with 1000's of employees. I've also worked at all levels from junior programmer to team lead/technical architect and one stint as a manager. I've seen various development methodologies from classic waterfall to Scrum implemented and used with varying degrees of success.

comment Should the number of developers be considered when estimating a task?
@Philip - I think we're splitting hairs here.

@Philip - refactoring is a complex task not a simple one. There are two many knock on effects. It will probably take the experienced developer less time because he's aware of these issues and can be proactive in dealing with them rather than reactive like the less experienced developer would be.

@GavinCoates - good point.

comment keeping connection open all time in sql
You need to be running the application as a service that's independent of login. However, you should really be looking at running it on a proper server. What happens when your laptop has to be shut down completely or moves out of range of a network?

comment Should you promise to deliver a feature that you aren't sure if its implementable?
You should aim to under promise and over deliver.

comment How Visual Studio could help to avoid duplicating code?
@MainMa - I should have made it clear that I was referring to the process.

Do you mean that people are adding the duplicate functionality to a class? The solution isn't technical but one of education. People should double check and if you institute code reviews you stand a greater chance of spotting duplicate code.

comment Silverlight, one database per user
@user1741807 - You'll could (indeed should) use a separate connection for the login and the actual data access.

comment What are programmers made to do in spare time in jobs?
@jwenting - Well training should come under "indirectly bringing the company money" - as in making sure your employees are still competent to do their job in 5 years time.

That is still work related. You won't be playing games or hiking etc.

You are working on a false premise. A developer working for a software company is just like a mechanic working for a car repair shop. If they aren't doing something that brings the company money (directly or indirectly) they are costing the company. If they have spare time then their management isn't doing their job properly

However, it's highly unlikely that they'll have nothing to do. There's always bugs to be fixed, new features to implement, new problems to solve.

comment How can I reformat my condition to make it better?
@ThomasEding - given that the question has 8 answers, one of which is accepted, it's probably a waste of everyone's time to migrate this now.

comment Use of keyword “Using” in C# interface
@MainMa - this is where Visual Studio puts the usings in the default templates, so unless Microsoft updates those sometime soon this question is valid.

comment Setting source IP with posix sockets
@tMC - not necessarily. There's no code (for example). I know it's not essential for Stack Overflow questions to have code, but that's certainly one vote against it being migrated.

comment Passing variables from PHP to C++
@DaveRandom - I don't think so. It's a design rather than implementation problem.

Questions should be migrated not cross posted. You should flag your question for moderator attention to facilitate this.

comment Is it possible for a good programmer to have never used version control?
Definitely need to find out how he managed updates, releases etc without version control
