comment Is SourceSafe really safe?
With all the alternatives, it's hard to justify using, because when it goes south, that's what you'll have: Nothing.

To buy or develop comes down to the right people doing due diligence. Simple as that. Think before you act. (+1)

I can't count the number of times I've seen the management stop developers (2 to 3) for a day then a deployment specialist to crash fix something (and do this numerous times over the product's life cycle) instead of spending 2-4 days to do it right. Great answer.

comment Enterprise knowledge sharing?
@Pierre, how do see competition instead of collaboration? I respect your view, but I honestly don't see it. I'm curious.

Great question. We have the same issues. We call it the "what if <insert-name> gets hit by a bus" syndrome. Thanks for asking this.

comment What is the most egregious waste of money you have seen, and what did you do about it?
Ironically, it was their call to attend. Which is good. The need for change is seen on the macro scale. Once we're at the code level, it's more challenging. It's not perfect, but any way to bring transparency is good.

As I said, "it's on going" and not easy. I'm also not sure if it's any one thing. Adopting agile practices and bringing transparency is a start. Example employing a daily stand-up helps. The CTO attends this nearly every day and pays attention to the "face planting" that is reported with the legacy code. The helps to identify some things.

+1 for pointing out the environmental costs. (would up vote if I could)

comment I've stopped coding for fun, is this a bad sign?
you are so right. I live in FL, so I can run year round w/o extra gear. I try to run 20-30 minutes at lunch time every day. Makes the afternoon MUCH easier to deal with.
