Ironically, it was their call to attend. Which is good. The need for change is seen on the macro scale. Once we're at the code level, it's more challenging. It's not perfect, but any way to bring transparency is good.

As I said, "it's on going" and not easy. I'm also not sure if it's any one thing. Adopting agile practices and bringing transparency is a start. Example employing a daily stand-up helps. The CTO attends this nearly every day and pays attention to the "face planting" that is reported with the legacy code. The helps to identify some things.

+1 for pointing out the environmental costs. (would up vote if I could)

I once saw a guy bench press 2 KLocs... (sorry, could not resist)

comment Will large screen increase develop productivity?
I agree w/ @Carson63000. I have two 24" at work and home. The primary (left) is landscaped and the right one is portrait. Takes a little getting used to, but it allows me to have an IDE open on the primary and then email, text editor, test VM, etc... on the secondary. Typically one app on top and one on the bottom.

comment I've stopped coding for fun, is this a bad sign?
you are so right. I live in FL, so I can run year round w/o extra gear. I try to run 20-30 minutes at lunch time every day. Makes the afternoon MUCH easier to deal with.

+1 for fitness, so many forgo this. I'd give another +1 for running if I could. :)

comment What's a nice explanation for pointers?
@Kirk, how so? let me see if I can clear it up.

comment Doesn't “if (0 == value) …” do more harm than good?
with all respect, when you've spent a late night (or two) and find the source (in C++ code) is a = instead of ==, it would carry some weight.

comment Is it ever ok to have an empty catch statement?
great point. debugging the debugging code is always a challenge.

comment I don't know C. And why should I learn it?
"hopefully an appreciation of the cost involved in working in that higher level language" - wish I could up-vote this multiple times for this sentence. Fantastic answer.

comment One-week release cycle: how do I make this feasible?
if I may add my own comments to @Wonko's great answer... Our company spent several years doing things similar to the OP. Growing from 6 or devs to 16. About 2 years ago, we decided to go Agile. We hired a Sr. Dev w/ Agile experience, switched 2 week iterations, implemented continuous integration, etc... We're still far from a textbook shop and it's been bumpy from time to time but we've really cut down the context switching, which is a huge win.

@Mattheiu, great answer. We do have the build servers fail on failed unit tests, etc... what software do you use to implement the bots? (perhaps you could elaborate a little, as this idea intrigues me as I'm sure others.) - TIA

comment If you could implement one change in a development team, what would it be?
@Matthieu, I've seen more than one company as recently as 2008 that refuse to use it. For a variety of reasons, none of which I humbly think are valid. But they weren't using it regardless. A lot of Project.0001.zip, Projects.0002.zip, etc... though.
