comment I don't know C. And why should I learn it?
"hopefully an appreciation of the cost involved in working in that higher level language" - wish I could up-vote this multiple times for this sentence. Fantastic answer.

comment If you could implement one change in a development team, what would it be?
Here is a SO question that gives pointers on daily stand-ups: stackoverflow.com/questions/3557498/…

comment One-week release cycle: how do I make this feasible?
if I may add my own comments to @Wonko's great answer... Our company spent several years doing things similar to the OP. Growing from 6 or devs to 16. About 2 years ago, we decided to go Agile. We hired a Sr. Dev w/ Agile experience, switched 2 week iterations, implemented continuous integration, etc... We're still far from a textbook shop and it's been bumpy from time to time but we've really cut down the context switching, which is a huge win.

If only the comment on VSS was a joke... avoid like the plague.

@Mattheiu, great answer. We do have the build servers fail on failed unit tests, etc... what software do you use to implement the bots? (perhaps you could elaborate a little, as this idea intrigues me as I'm sure others.) - TIA

@Matthieu, I've seen more than one company as recently as 2008 that refuse to use it. For a variety of reasons, none of which I humbly think are valid. But they weren't using it regardless. A lot of Project.0001.zip, Projects.0002.zip, etc... though.

comment Are there non-programming related activities akin to solving programming problems?
+1 for two reasons: IMO it's a valid answer & I don't feel negative votes for valid answers inspire the community to participate.

how does this (or @JB King's) warrant a down vote? mine is a quick elaboration of the OP's suggestion couple w/ my personal habits. @JB King's is a completely valid response to the question. Down vote me all you want, I'll always give my $.02 regardless.

comment What are common mistakes in coding?
Having read McConnell (I think it was him), "back in the day", I always use "Yoda" notation. More force of habit now. I know this will trigger a debate, say what you want, before TDD, this saved me more than once.
