@PaulButcher I agree with you on that. But bear in mind that the downvote arrow has the tooltip "This question does not show any research effort; it is unclear or not useful". I'd say I have made a research effort and even added alternative solutions to my issue but wanted to know what approach was better. So a downvote shouldn't have been appropriate either. The right way to go should have been editing the title and improving the question rather downvoting. Improved questions are better than downvoted questions, right? :) PS: I have already edited the title.

Downvoting without explaining why doesn't leave much room for improvement...

However, in most languages you will at least have to add an attribute somewhere (as the type you mentioned) to handle that (like in DB). The issue is that then, as you say in #3, you will have to update the class diagram and then it will not be as language-independent as before. So I feel like I'm in a loop there. I was asked to model the solution as language independently as possible, so I guess I will have to go for the association to the hierarchy solution. As a side note, you perfectly got a somehow hidden issue which is Plan and Bridge have nothing in common. But that is a diff story :)

Good comments. In DB design we first create the conceptual model, we then turn it into the logical model (by resolving hierarchies and multivalued fields) and then into physical. How you resolve the hierarchies (eg: killing parents) is already documented and quite mechanical. No change in a logical model should propagate to the conceptual model. The difference between DB models is quite clear but it is not the case for class diagrams. As you say in #2, I also believe you should leave the underlying language determine how you are going to distinguish between different class instances. [Cont

@MichaelT When it comes to knowledge I have no language preference :) Right now, I would need the PHP answer more than the Java one. However, I would like to know the answer for Java too and I feel like asking a so very similar question twice wouldn't make any sense. I guess Java experts can answer the Java one and PHP experts can answer the PHP one.
