@Berin Loritsch: Perhaps I do get it now. In fact, I have seen some seniors (including my current boss) who simply rocks when it comes to problem solving. He doesn't jump with joy when I say you can do X easily using this framework but he isn't afraid to use it when he sees it is actually useful. So perhaps other seniors who are not good, are not good because they never were. Not because they are out of touch because of new technologies. I feel a lot better now. (I hope what I have written makes sense)

I do agree with your first point that sometimes youngsters fail to see the point of senior developers. But I really have seen seniors struggling with newer technologies. For example, once a senior insisted on defining a CSV based text protocol over TCP for RPC whereas today technology gives so many ready-made solutions. Though basic skills matter most but knowing your tools/framework also matter to some level. Can you design a system without even knowing the technology stack you are going to use? Difficult for me to visualize...
