comment Would md5 hashes allow detection of synced files?
In short, yes. However, I would suggest a more modern hash, look up SHA on wikipedia. Are you storing the files on disk or in the database?

comment Formatting SQL Based on an AST
Off topic: I looked at your site and all of your examples involved a lot more code than just typing out the SQL. Curious: what is the benefit of this library?

comment Version control: Dealing with incomplete/broken code
I find it convenient to rebase or sqash-merge several commits together into a coherent changeset before sending upstream for merging. This way, each commit is ideally a logical step in the evolution of the software (rather than half-step).

comment Ensuring conceptual integrity in Python project with multiple programmers
Ownership without proper accountability and oversight is a good recipe for endless chaos. Eisenhower threatened to resign his command if the powers that were would not place the airborne and bombers under his command for the invasion of Europe.

comment Why exactly can't PHP have full unicode support?
I left PHP for Python in 2006 after using it for 5 solid years -- Python has an incredible development process and good leadership -- plus the language is so much more terse, powerful, and consistent than PHP. The main challenge is to find the right web framework. We rolled our own -- AppStruct.

comment Alternatives to sql like databases
Why are you trying to re-invent a perfect wheel, just because of a small amount of data? MySQL or PostgreSQL or SQLExpress take very little knowledge or maintenance to run, and fit your requirements perfectly (client/server).

Your software can be no better than the input it is given. It sounds like you need to get the family on the same page.

comment How can I make my PHP development environment more efficient?
Your dev machine should be the same stack as your production machine. Use samba to create a network share, and that solves the moving-files problem. Take a look at the zend tools for debugging to see what they have. If at all possible, use full databases, version control, etc...

comment Converting lib from other language to python and Rights issue
This brings up the question of copyrighting specific code, or patenting specific functionality... Not that it matters, considering that it is an apache-licensed library. But ideas come from many places, including existing projects. You are rewriting, not translating, btw.
