I also found this very helpful for communication, but you also have to make sure you define tasks that are small enough that you can see progress. Otherwise you get people saying "working on the UI" for a whole month, and that's not very helpful. I would suggest you read the Scrum/Agile book and try to implement the whole processes rather then just the meeting.

I agree, don't concentrate on languages, learn the paradigms. Also learn programming fundamentals, algorithms, design patterns, objects, etc...
