Development Manager and ex-MS Developer based on Scotland. Still passably competent with SQL and VBA and dream of one day doing more programming but for now mainly interested in best practice, management and methodology type things.

When I'm not working I spend my time doting on my daughters and/or trying to catch up on the sleep they've deprived me of.

@Drew - I would seem them as equivalent for the sake of this question as the assessment process is similar.

@Drew - That's cool - the last paragraph is all about that. If you enjoy it then great, but time is time whether you're paid for it or not. Why would you waste your own time more than work time?

comment Does over-reliance on tools imply that you are lazy?
@Bryan - In the UK I suspect it could be taught better but I've never worked anywhere that didn't have source control so it tends to be something people learn within about three days of their first job. Unit testing is a bit rarer - certainly not the norm but then you could argue that it's still more debated as to it's exact merits and how and when it should be used.

You say you have an erratic connection which limits github or similar. How are you expecting something like Dropbox to work any better given the nature of the connection?

comment What are the best FizzBuzz questions for interviewing a candidate for a Software Developer role?
@Xorlev - This isn't the only question you'd ask but if you throw three simple problems at them and they drop the ball on more than one of them I'm going to move on to the next person. You have to be realistic about how much time you invest in someone who is showing themselves unable to solve basic problems.

Also FizzBuzz questions are designed to weed people out before you invest that much time in someone.

Oh, I don't know, perhaps to co-ordinate deliveries, manage clients and keep that sort of crap out of the developers way?
