comment Generic approach to sharing of items
I think showing products based on context, as described in the last comment, is the best way to go.

I would strongly advise you to challenge that set of requirements. If products have any properties besides their name (like a colour or description), you will get endless user complaints that they lost products because someone shared a list with them or they shared a list with someone else. And even without the additional properties, you already see the technical difficulties you get in implementing those requirements in combination.

You seem to have some conflicting requirements. Either products must have a unique name, which implies that products must be global to enforce the uniqueness, or different users can have distinct products with the same name.

comment Generic approach to sharing of items
Why do products have to be removed from the database in solution 2 when a list gets shared with a user that already has a similar product in another list? Also, what would happen if A and C both have a separate list containing "bread" and they both share their list with B?

comment How do you deal with external sources that do not conform to service standards and protocols?
One of the primary aspects of creating a successful implementation of any standard is to be strict in the messages you send, but be as forgiving as you can in what you receive.

comment Are debug-build-only UI controls a bad practice?
@user5226582: The better practice is to drop the "debug" button and just go to the debug page by entering its URL in your browser directly (if that is possible in your setup).

comment Can a tree be used to create a stack?
@DavidArno: Even in maths, there is no concept of "the first element of a set". That is what is meant with sets being unordered.

comment Connecting directly to another computer knowing only the MAC address?
@Colin: On the MAC level, a network interface can only connect to interfaces in the same (sub-)network. To communicate with machines outside the local network, routers are used to transfer packets from one network to another and to reach the destination, multiple routers can sit between you and the remote machine.

comment How should I express the complexity of two nested loops over different datasets in Big O notation?
Why is the reduction from O(n*m) to O(n^2) valid? You lose the important information that the complexity depends on two independent inputs.
