There is nothing wrong with your solution - I might have misunderstood the original question (thinking that one board may belong to many users). Again, most often the planning requires a pen and a piece of paper and drawing your relations the way you need it. I corrected the answer above to match your task. It works well with 3 models - User, Board, Share

+1 for both Agile Web Development and Rails Tutorial. Ryan Bates' railscasts (railscasts.com) are also invaluable and I leared a great deal by watching the screencasts consequently and following up with references on show notes. Also, DHH suggested in one of his interviews, select a particular project and learn what you need to get this project done.
