My school never offered any programming classes but I took all the computer classes I could. For the past year I have been teaching myself programming in hopes of getting good enough at it that I could get a job doing it some day. I started with C++ but then gravitated towards Java and that's what I've been mainly learning this past year. I have learned a bit about other languages like PHP, HTML, C#, XML, Javascript, and a few others. I don't really want to LEARN a new language though until I feel I'm comfortable with Java I can use it to do anything I want. If you have tips, suggestions, or useful information that could help me as a beginning programmer it would be awesome if you could send me it. ^_^

comment TDD: Am I doing it right?
Thanks for the good links. I'm half way through reading "Clean Code" and have a few other books lined up to read like "Code Complete" so there is still a lot more I need to learn. I just figured I would see if I was thinking about all this in the right direction.

That pretty much addresses what I was concerned about. I was feeling that I shouldn't be testing every method like I was, but wasn't sure. Looks like I may still need to read some more about TDD.

Getter and setter tests don't take long, so I probably will continue to do them. However, I never copy and paste any of my code so I don't run into that issue.

I was writing tests for getters and setters too so thanks for that tip. That'll save me some un-needed work.

Ahh, okay. That's not what I'm doing. I just usually end up thinking of a different situation I could test my methods a ways down the line after I've already made their initial test. I was just making sure those 'extra' tests were worth making, or if it was over doing it.

Wow, thanks! Those sound like some really useful tips and I'll be sure to read those books. Right now I'm reading Code Complete. Thanks DXM

Thanks for the answer. I like your suggestion of starting something small and growing on it, I'll have to do that. :)
