comment How to start project?
@rmx: Time estimates are useful and easy. This is an opportunity to develop that habit and become more skilled at estimates. Regardless of the project size it's a university project. It's worth it and it's not a good idea to skip it. You don't want to allocate 30 hours, use those up and discover it'll take 20 more hours which you would've known at the beginning had you made the estimates. Bam, pick any or all of the following: social engagement down the toilet, project delivered late, cram time that impacts study in other subjects. Not fun.

comment How to interview someone you know well?
@ysolik: The interview can take place in either a business world or a personal world, and the results in everyone else's eyes will correlate precisely. Someone else interviewing: If they get hired they passed. If they don't they didn't. You interviewing: If they get hired it was nepotism. If they don't it might have been a grudge, an I-showed-him, a power trip, etc. Business world or personal world: Choose.

comment How do you explain refactoring to a non-technical person?
@Peter: I think we've all had to go behind the TV at least once though. Just explain it as a hundred times worse and spin a yarn of cables everywhere and pull this and pull that and discover a dead civilisation somewhere in the mess.

@HedgeMage: In that case... +1, sounds perfect.

Not the best analogy because it makes it sound like bad stuff just spontaneously crawls into your theater, as oppose to the bad stuff appearing as a direct result of continuously building your theater.
