Well, ZFS (a filesystem) decided that 64 bits resulted in large number, but it could still be somewhat reasonable. So they decided to go with 128 bits. Apparently that number is larger the total number of atoms in the universe, and is therefore a good way to represent any quantity that is limited by matter.
