Is it a good idea to schedule regular time to clean up code? What do you mean when you say 'clean up'? Is it prettifying the code or handling all the FIXME and TODO tags or getting more performance out of quickly-written code? Or something else? Any of these could be classified as cleaning up but I would attach different priorities to each of them. |

Dealing with engineers that frequently leave their jobs I once told the bare truth when I left a company and regretted it. I was annoyed and told them everything I was feeling. They couldn't cope with it. |

Are there any well recognized Web Developer Certifications? I agree to a large extent with what you're saying. I have done a handful of certifications and although I have won a bit of respect for doing it on my own time, the greatest benefit has been for me. Doing the certs forces you to look at and learn aspects of a subject which you might otherwise ignore due to lack of time or interest. I think that is something to consider. Also, I would say that having certs on your resumé has got to be better than having none! |

Some advice concerning Oracle and Java Sure, it's nice to be really, spiffingly good at something but it is also useful to be aware of other technologies. Quite often it will help you become better in your core skill. I don't think it is an either / or decision. |

Crunch-time Sleep Deprivation: Survival Strategies? @DevSolo, my rant is aimed at those who think this is a sensible or even economically viable solution. It is not. For those who think it's cool/Jedi warrior worthy/ or whatever I guess my rant will fall on deaf ears :-) We all have to do this at some time but it's nothing to be 'proud' of. |
